My Digitally Filed Photography Portfolio

To see most of my digitally filed photography portfolio, click on that link over there, to PhotoCamel.com, that is at the top of the lefthand side column. You can check out my photo albums on that web site.

I can't afford a commercial web site for my photography and writings, because I'm living (surviving) on a disabled veteran's pension--a very small, monthly check. Consequently, I use this set of blogs and other Internet postings, which are all linked together nicely in the left column of this blog, as a "poor man's web site".

David, I too was assigned to Okinawa, although a short while after you were there. I was an MP with 62d MP Company (RAFP) early 1973 to late 1974. Found the Okinawans to be very friendly but didn't really care for the Japanese that had come down from the mainland. Our Oki security guards didn't like them either as most of the SG's were older men who recalled the treatment of the Oki population at the hands of the Japanese Army during WW II.

Thanks for the comment. That's great historical perspective.

In the tiny "Mama-san stores" off post in the back streets it was explained to me that the Okinawans got the cheapest prices on the soda-candy bar-banana combo snack I often bought, then the GIs got the next higher priced deal, and then the Japanese were charged a few cents more than everyone else. I had no problem understanding why we GIs paid more because the Okinawans were paid so little for hourly wages, but I asked the Mama-san why the Japanese were charged the most. She said she did not like the mainland Japanese because they treated Okinawans, the old Mama-san rolled her eyes in deep thought for a second or two then grinned and said, "they treat us like-a hicks." I doubled over with friendly laughter as I heard her pull that word "hicks" out of the air. It amazed me how many times I heard Okinawans use similar American-style terminology.

And I hope you have been to the MP's web site that is liked to over in my links column at the lefthand side of this blog. It's a great site to visit for any ex-GI from The Rock or anyone searching for the histories of American servicemen on Okinawa.

David, are you aware of the website for 62d? It was started by Bob Escher who was there about the same time frame as we were. Go to www.62ndmpco.org and sign up!

I have a link to that MP site over in the left side column of this web site under "Other Okinawa Veterans' Web Sites." The MP site has some great stories and photos on it, and they are for far more than just for former MPs; just about any Okinawa vet can find something they remember about "The Rock" on that site.
